PISCATAWAY, N.J.—Recording a split on the day, Pitt’s softball team fell 2-1 in the second game of its doubleheader against Rutgers, this afternoon, at RU Softball Complex. The Panthers slipped 27-23 overall and 10-10 in the Big East, while the Scarlet Knights improved to 23-30 on the season and 8-12 in the league.
Just as they did in game one of the doubleheader, the Panthers scored a single run in the opening frame. First, junior Ashley Amistade singled to left field. She then stole second and moved to third when she tagged on a sacrifice hit from freshman Holly Stevens. Amistade then stole home to score her team-leading 31st run of the year.
Rutgers tied the game in the bottom of the first inning with a single to right center field. Later, the Scarlet Knights took the eventual lead with a single run in the fifth inning.
Junior Alyssa O’Connell (12-12) took the loss, allowing the two runs off four hits. She also struck out six batters in six innings of work.
The Panthers and Scarlet Knights conclude their series on Sunday, May 8, with a game at noon.
