PISCATAWAY, N.J.—Sophomore Yvette Bravo hit her third homer of the season, as Pitt’s softball team suffered a 7-1 loss in its regular-season finale against Rutgers, this afternoon, at RU Softball Complex. The Panthers slipped to 27-24 on the year and 10-11 in Big East action, while the Scarlet Knights improved to 24-30 overall and 9-12 in the league.
Bravo led off the fourth inning with a solo homer through left field. That homerun was the third of the year for Bravo and the 27th of the season for the Panthers.
Bravo is one of five Panthers to record three or more home runs this season, including freshman Holly Stevens (10), junior Reba Tutt (6) and sophomores Ciera Damon (4) and Kristen Cheesebrew (3).
In the sixth inning, Pitt looked as if it would score again as sophomore Keli Gaynor hit a two-out single to left field. Damon followed with her third double of the season, but Gaynor was thrown out as she attempted to run home on the play.
Rutgers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening inning, which included a three-run homer. The Scarlet Knights added two more runs in the second frame off three hits. They notched their final run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth due to three one-out singles.
Senior Kayla Zinger entered the game after that final run and retired the next two batters. She pitched 2.2 hitless innings and collected two strikeouts.
Junior Cory Berliner (13-9) took the loss, giving up the first four runs of the game. Classmate Alyssa O’Connell tossed 2.1 innings, allowing three runs off six hits.
The Panthers await their seeding and opponent in the Big East Championships, which should be announced Sunday evening.
