UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.—Sophomore Yvette Bravo smacked her first homer of the season, however the University of Pittsburgh softball team fell 5-1 to take a split in its doubleheader against in-state rival Penn State, at Nittany Lion Field. The Panthers slipped to 18-15 on the season, while the Nittany Lions improved to 23-11.
Bravo became the sixth Panther to hit a home run this season. She gave Pitt its lone run of the game in the seventh on a one-out hit over the centerfield wall.
Penn State got on the board early with three runs off three hits in the first inning. Later in the fourth, the Nittany Lions added two more runs off two hits before an out was secured. Pitt would then record its ninth double play of the season. Next, sophomore Niki Cogningi earned the final out of the stanza with a groundball.
Junior Cory Berliner (9-5) took the loss, giving up three runs off six hits.
The Panthers host Kent State on Tuesday, April 8, in a 2 p.m. doubleheader, at Trees Field.
