MOREHEAD, Ky.—Pitt won its final game of the Morehead State Invitational, as the Panthers earned a 3-2 decision over host Morehead State, this afternoon. Pitt improved to 6-7 on the year, while the Eagles slipped to 3-8 on the season.
Pitt recorded all the runs it needed in the third inning, as three Panthers scored off two hits and two Eagle errors. First, freshman Krista Rodgers recorded a lead-off single and scored off a throwing error on sophomore Jessica Rhodunda’s bunt. Rhodunda would then cross home plate after junior Ashley Amistade bunted.
Next, freshman Holly Stevens tallied her fifth extra-base hit of the season with a double that drove Amistade in for the winning run.
However, Morehead State decided to change pitchers and held off Pitt’s threat to score again.
The Eagles struck first with a run off a single up the middle. Then in the fourth another single through the middle drove in a run. Pitt kept Morehead State from scoring again by going after the lead runner and then sophomore Niki Cognigni caught a line drive for the final out of the inning.
Junior Cory Berliner (3-2) earned the win, giving up four hits and striking out three in seven innings of work.
The Panthers travel to South Florida for an invitational next weekend.
