PITTSBURGH -
Annual awards were handed out at the East Atlantic Gymnastics League banquet Friday night and Pitt freshman Meaghan Biros was named Co-EAGL Rookie of the Year for her efforts in the 2010 season.
“We are really excited for Meaghan,” head coach Debbie Yohman said. “Meaghan and Alicia (Talucci), who won Rookie of the Year last season, are really special, but even greater than that is that they have a fantastic team to back them up. We are very fortunate.”
Biros (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) shares the honor with Kelsey Cofsky of Maryland. In her rookie season, Biros continually improved upon her best scores, setting highs of 9.875 on the vault, 9.775 on the uneven bars, 9.650 on the balance beam and 9.775 in the all-around. In addition to the Rookie of the Year honor, she was named an All-EAGL First Team member on the vault (9.800) and second team in the all-around.
Pitt placed three on the first team vault including Biros, Dani Bryan (9.836) and Alicia Talucci (9.806). The three gymnasts named to the first team marks the most first teamers for any school on any event this year. Vault was consistently Pitt’s strongest event in 2010 with the Panthers averaging a 49.035 RQS.
“What a great accomplishment to have three on the first team for vault,” Yohman said. “That is something we are so proud of.”
The Panthers also placed Shannon Vafiadou on the second team for vault, after averaging a 9.770 on the year. The junior claimed a spot on the second team for the floor exercise, as well, with a 9.738 on the year. Also earning second team honors was Jen Liberato, on the uneven bars with a 9.668 average on the year.
On the beam, Talucci (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville), who was the 2009 EAGL Rookie of the Year, earned Pitt’s lone first team mention with a 9.748 average on the season. Talucci also earned first team recognition for the all-around with a 38.900, which is good enough for second in the league. Talucci was also named the Pitt MVP for her performance throughout the season.
Competition for the EAGL Championships begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Lundholm Gymnasium in Durham, N.H.
