PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh women’s gymnastics team participated in a ‘Seeds of Hope’ community service project this past weekend.
The team helped with several renovation projects, including building and painting walls, planting new flowers and bulbs in the lawn, wiring basement lights, removing rotted floor boards, and several other tasks that the organization needed.
“The team did a great job,” Head Coach Debbie Yohman said. “Each one volunteered for a different task that was listed and then rotated to do other things during the day. Some girls got a chance to do things they have never done before, including using an electric saw, loading/emptying wheelbarrows of heavy soil, and running heavy gauge wiring through the ceiling!
“Several members of the team asked about going back,” Yohman added. “The center needs more volunteer work and I think they saw the possibility to continue helping out! It was probably one of the most meaningful services we’ve performed in terms of actually seeing your work in progress.”
Through Habitat for Humanity, Seeds of Hope is a faith based organization that is renovating an old church. Seeds of Hope reaches the people in the communities they serve, which are very diverse ethnically and economically, through a liturgical and blended worship service.
