Providence Topples Pitt 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Pitt men’s soccer team fell to BIG EAST opponent Providence, 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Glay Field. The Panthers drop to 6-7-2 on the year and 1-4-2 in the BIG EAST. The Friars improve to 7-5-2, and 2-4-1 in conference play.
Providence holds the series lead with a 12-8-1 all-time record against Pitt.
Providence struck first when they grabbed a 1-0 lead after Andrew Sousa controlled a ball from teammate Giuseppe Guerriero in the 30th minute. Sousa shot the ball from 22 yards out past Pitt goalkeeper Hami Kara and into the lower left corner of the net for the first half lead.
The Friars maintained the 1-0 lead into halftime.
With eight minutes left in regulation senior Andy Kalas tallied the Panthers lone goal of the day when he controlled a ball off a corner kick from Ryan Brode. Kalas shot the ball from five yards out and into the back of the net to tie the game 1-1. The goal marks Kalas’ first goal of the season and the fourth of his career. He now has four points on the year.
In the 85th minute Matt Marcin tallied the game-winning goal for the Friars when he shot the ball from the right corner of the box. His shot bounced off the left goal post and into the net for the 2-1 advantage.
The Panthers held an advantage in corners 7-3, but were outshot 18-9 by the Friars.
Brode led the Panthers with three shots, and one shot on goal against the Friars. He leads the team with 36 shots on the year.
The Panthers will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 27 when they travel to South Bend to face conference opponent Notre Dame at Alumni Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
The Panthers will conclude their regular season on Saturday, Oct. 30 with a home contest against Connecticut at North Allegheny High School. Kick off is at 1 p.m.
