PITTSBURGH--Pitt junior goalkeeper Morie Kephart tied school records for season shutouts and career shutouts with a 0-0 tie on Thursday against South Florida.
Kephart registered her fifth shutout of the season, tying the season record held by both Nicole Bashor (1997) and Jamie Pelusi (2004). It marked her 10th career shutout which ties fellow recordholders Bashor (1997-99) and Pelusi (2001-04). Pitt still has eight games remaining on the schedule.
Playing a key role in Kephart's two records is Pitt's backfield which has helped yield just five goals on the year, a mark which ranks tied for second in the Big East. The backfield, consisting of junior Kat Weiler, junior Rebecca Fraser, senior Maura Caslin, sophomore Brittany Pfaff and freshman Abby Baldys is enjoying a productive season. Weiler and Baldys have started and played every minute of every game thus far this season.
Against South Florida, Kephart finished with eight saves on the night. Kephart, who was named one of College Soccer 360's Primetime Players of the Week, has allowed just five goals in nine games and 853 minutes on the year. The two-time Big East weekly honor roll selection leads the Big East Conference with 45 saves and ranks fifth in the league with a spectacular 0.53 goals against average on the year. Her five shutouts rank tied for third in the conference.
Kephart also ranks among national goalkeepers in the current NCAA statistics as of Sept. 20, 2009. She ranks 22nd nationally in save percentage and 41st nationally in goals against average. As a team, Pitt ranks 17th in save percentage. Freshman Ashley Cuba, who leads the Panthers in scoring with six goals and 15 points, ranks 37th nationally in points per game and 40th in goals per game.
Pitt (5-2-2/0-0-2 Big East) is next in action on Sunday, Sept. 27 at Marquette.
