Women's Volleyball Wins Season Opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Pitt’s women’s volleyball team won its season opener against Belmont, 3-2, during the first day of the Sheraton Riverside Cardinal Classic, hosted by Louisville at Cardinal Arena. The Panthers won with scores of 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 18-25, 18-16.
Junior Amy Town led the team with 26 kills and a .478 hitting percentage, while senior Meagan Dooley added 16 kills off a .467 hitting clip. Leading the defense, senior Michelle Rossi posted a team-high 13 digs, while Town chipped in 10.
Pitt took a 2-1 lead in the match, after Town collected seven kills, two digs and one ace in the third set. However, the Bruins held the Panthers to 11 kills, while Pitt committed five errors in the fourth set to force a deciding game.
In the final set, Town went 7-for-8 and tallied a .875 hitting percentage. After the score was tied at 16, sophomore Allyson Hodnik set Town for a kill and the eventual lead. Town then earned the winning point with an ace.
Hodnik tallied 48 assists in the match.
Collectively, Pitt out-blocked Belmont, 8-4, as Dooley stuffed a match-high six in the contest. The Panthers improved to 2-0 in its series with the Bruins.
Play continues on Saturday in the Sheraton Riverside Cardinal Classic, as the Panthers face Wichita State at 10 a.m., and Arizona at 5 p.m. Gametracker is available for both games.
