LOUSIVILLE, Ky.--In a battle of the unbeatens during the Sheraton Cardinal Classic at Cardinal Arena, the University of Pittsburgh women's volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season to Arizona, 3-1. Pitt dropped the match with scores of 26-28, 25-14, 23-25 and 24-26.
Sophomore Allyson Hodnik tallied a match-high 53 assists, while senior Michelle Rossi posted her second consecutive contest with 21 digs.
Offensively, junior Amy Town led the Panthers with 21 kills, while senior Megan Dooley chipped in 17.
Pitt (2-1) tied the match at 1-1, after taking the second set, 25-14. Dooley led the Panthers with six kills in that game, as the squad out-hit the Wildcats (3-0), 16-9.
The Panthers would then trail 21-19 in the third set, until back-to-back kills from Hartman tied the set at 21. A few plays later, Pitt fell behind 24-22, but a kill from Dooley brought the Panthers within a point. Unfortunately, the Wildcats would rally the final points of the game and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set started close, until a Pitt attack error gave Arizona a 13-8 advantage. Sophomore Rachel Kalberer pulled the Panthers within one, 13-12, with a kill a few plays later to force a Wildcat timeout.
Later in that game, Pitt led 23-22 off a Dooley kill. However, the score would be tied again at 24, before Arizona tallied two kills to end the match.
Earlier in the first set of the contest, junior Imani Harper led the squad with four stuffs and four kills.
The Panthers will play in their home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 2, against Kent State at 7 p.m.
