YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio—Senior Sam Card recorded her third homer of the season, as the University of Pittsburgh softball team swept Youngstown State with a 7-1 victory in game two of today’s doubleheader at McCune Park. Pitt improved to 23-22, while the Penguins slipped to 8-37 overall.
Card recorded her 21st career homerun in the fourth inning, with a shot over the left center wall. Card’s hit allowed sophomore Reba Tutt to score. That homer was also Card’s second of the day, as she hit a three-run bomb in the first game of the doubleheader.
Earlier in that same inning, freshman Niki Cognigni led off with a single that split the third baseman and shorts stop. A sacrifice hit and a wild pitch then moved her to third, before Tutt singled to right center and sent Cognigni home. The Panthers led 6-0 through four innings.
Pitt got on the board early, scoring three runs in the first inning. It all began with a wild pitch to freshman Kristen Cheesebrew, which scored Tutt. Cheesebrew, then, hit a single just outside of the second baseman’s reach to drive in sophomore Ashley Amistade and freshman Yvette Bravo. Amistade singled, while Bravo was hit by a pitch in the inning.
Later, Bravo recorded a RBI in the sixth with a single through the left side that scored Tutt. Tutt went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run, while Card and Cheesebrew each drove in two runs.
Junior Kayla Zinger pitched four innings, giving up just two hits and striking out five. Sophomore Alyssa O’Connell entered in the fifth frame, allowing four hits and a run while collecting two strikeouts.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Penguins threatened to score with zero outs on the board and two runners on, when Pitt turned its eighth double play of the year. Junior Megan Livesey made and unassisted play at third and then fired the ball to freshman Ciera Damon at first for the second out.
However, in the sixth inning, a sacrifice hit scored Youngstown State’s lone run of the day.
The Panthers resume Big East play on Saturday, hosting Rutgers in a doubleheader at noon.
