SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.—A five-run second inning proves to be enough, as the University of Pittsburgh softball team earned the sweep over Seton Hall, in a 7-5 victory this afternoon at Ivy Hill Park. Pitt improved to 20-21 overall and 6-12 in the Big East, while the Pirates slipped to 20-24-1 on the season and 7-11 in the league.
Sophomore Reba Tutt led the way at the plate with 2-for-3 hitting, two runs and a RBI. She opened the game with a lead-off triple to right field. Sophomore Ashley Amistade followed with a single to left field to send Tutt home. Tutt’s triple was her fourth of the season and Amistade’s sixth RBI.
Next, the Panthers used a five-run second inning to take the eventual lead in the contest. Scoring began when freshman Jessica Rhodunda doubled, allowing second baseman Kristen Cheesebrew to score a run after singling earlier in the inning.
In all, junior Megan Livesey, Rhodunda, Amistade and Tutt would score. Freshman Amanda Heitmeier highlighted those that singled, as she tallied her third double of the year.
Pitt’s final run of the game was recorded after freshman Ciera Damon tallied her fourth homerun of the season.
The Pirates finally answered with one run in the bottom of the sixth and then four runs in the seventh. Right fielder Yvette Bravo stopped the damage in the seventh with a caught fly ball, for the final out of the game.
Damon was 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI, while Amistade was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI, as well.
Junior Kayla Zinger tossed the win, giving up eight hits and four earned runs in 6.2 innings. Sophomore Alyssa O’Connell posted her second save of the year, in the contest.
Pitt faces Providence in a doubleheader at noon on Sunday.
