PITTSBURGH-A homerun in back-to-back innings and several extra base hits allow the University of Pittsburgh softball team an eight-run mercy rule, as the Panthers win 9-0 over Buffalo in six innings during the first game of its doubleheader, at Trees Field. Pitt improved to 17-21 on the year, while the Bulls are now 18-18 overall.
The game was scoreless till the bottom of the fourth inning, when freshman Ciera Damon smacked her third homer of the year. Damon collected two RBI, as shortstop Niki Cognigni scored after reaching base on an infield error.
In the next inning, freshman Yvette Bravo would add to the total with a lead-off homer over the left center field fence. That long ball was her team-leading fourth of the season. Bravo would finish 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI in the game.
Later in the fifth, senior Samantha Card would hit a 2RBI double up the middle, driving in sophomores Ashley Amistade and Reba Tutt. On the next at-bat, Cognigni singled to center field, which scored second baseman Kristen Cheesebrew. Cheesebrew scored the fourth run of the inning for Pitt, after being walked.
Cheesebrew then smacked a 3RBI double in the sixth inning to end the game. Her double sent Amistade, freshman Jessica Rhodunda and pinch runner Sara Falotico in for a score.
The Bulls only left one runner on base in the contest, while sophomore Cory Berliner gave up just two hits. Berliner (7-8) tossed her second shutout of the year and recorded five strikeouts.
