PITTSBURGH—Senior Sam Card improved to second overall with her 19th career homerun, as the University of Pittsburgh softball team garnered the sweep over Buffalo with a 5-0 decision in game two of its doubleheader, at Trees Field. Pitt improved to 18-21 on the year, while the Bulls are now 18-19 overall.
Card blasted her first homerun of the season, yet tallied her 19th career long ball with a shot in the third inning. She is now tied with Christa Hunter (2003-06) and is four shy of tying for first on the all-time list. That homer also scored center fielder Reba Tutt, who singled in the inning.
Earlier in the same frame, freshman Jessica Rhodunda scored an unearned run when the pitcher fielded a groundball and went to third for the out, but the infielder dropped the ball and Rhodunda continued home.
Pitt posted its final run of the game in the same fashion during the fourth inning, as pinch runner Sara Falotico made it safe to third before scoring on a dropped throw on Rhodunda’s at-bat. Rhodunda stole two bases in the inning, before being left stranded.
Scoring began in the second stanza, as Card recorded the first run of the game off a single from freshman Yvette Bravo. Card was on base after hitting a lead-off single up the middle. Card was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI in the game.
Junior Kayla Zinger (3-9) gave up just three hits in her second shutout of the year. Zinger collected five strikeouts in the game.
Pitt will resume Big East play on the road, travelling to Seton Hall on Saturday, April 18, for noon doubleheader.
