PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh softball team fell 5-2 to No. 18 Louisville in game one of its doubleheader at Trees Field. The Panthers slipped to 15-19 on the year and 3-10 in the Big East, while the Cardinals improved to 35-5 on the season and 11-2 in the league.
The game start with a great defensive stand from the Panthers, as sophomore Cory Berliner got the Panthers out of jam in the opening stanza. After giving up two hits to left field, she fanned a batter, then fielded a ground ball and finally got the third out with a grounder to freshman Kristen Cheesebrew at second base.
Later, however, the Cards scored their runs off two homers, including a grand slam in the fourth.
Pitt answered in the sixth inning, when Cheesebrew recorded her eighth RBI of the season with a hit through left center field. Her shot allowed freshman Sara Falatico to score after replacing first baseman Ciera Damon on bases. Damon singled up the middle earlier in the frame.
Two batters later, freshman Amanda Heitmeier tallied a RBI when she was walked after senior catcher Sam Card loaded bases with an infield single.
In the top of the sixth, center fielder Reba Tutt held off another Louisville run when she gunned the ball to Card at the plate for the final out of the inning. Offensively, Card finished the game 2-for-3 with seven putouts.
Berliner (5-7) threw the complete game, as she struck out five batters and gave up 11 hits.
Game two will be delayed due to rain in the area.
