PITTSBURGH—Not letting the rain end play this afternoon, the University of Pittsburgh softball team earned a 2-1 victory over Penn State in eight innings, at Trees Field. Pitt improved to 14-9 overall with the win, while the Nittany Lions slipped 9-14.
In the top of the extra inning, sophomore Reba Tutt caught a fly ball with bases loaded to hold off a Penn State attack.
Then, in the bottom of the inning, Tutt hit a single through left field that placed sophomore Ashley Amistade on third. After Tutt stole second, a wild pitch from Penn State’s pitcher sent Amistade in for the winning run. Amistade reached base after the third baseman misplayed a groundball.
Earlier in the game, bases were juiced in the top of the second inning, when pitcher Cory Berliner recorded one of her three strikeouts to get the Panthers out of a jam.
Pitt then decided to score itself in the bottom of the inning, as freshman Kristen Cheesebrew hit a one-out triple down the right line to put the Panthers in scoring position.
Freshman shortstop Niki Cognigni followed with a line through left field that hopped the fence for two bases, allowing Cheesebrew to score.
The Panthers held the 1-0 lead through six innings, until Penn State tied the game in the seventh inning with a bomb to right center field.
Sophomore Alyssa O’Connell entered the game in the fifth innings, collecting four strikeouts. She recorded her eighth win of the season and first save in the contest.
Due to rain, the second game of the doubleheader was cancelled. Pitt will resume Big East play on Friday, March 27, at Syracuse. The doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m.
