PITTSBURGH — The University of Pittsburgh baseball team’s six-game winning streak came to an end here today at Trees Field, as the visiting Bearcats of Cincinnati snatched the final game of the series 9-5.
UC (10-8, 1-2 Big East) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first two innings of play. Mike Spina’s two-run homer to left-center field was followed Cameron Satterwhite’s RBI double to right field to start the Bearcats scoring.
Cincinnati added one in the top half of the second when catcher Nick Rohlfs homered to left field.
The Panther (11-6, 2-1 Big East) offense went to work in the bottom of the third, tying the game at 4-4. Danny Lopez singled to start the inning and scored two batters later when Frank Mercurio grounded out to second base. Cory Brownsten singled up the middle, scoring Chris Warner, who doubled earlier in the inning. Zach Duggan capped the Pitt scoring with a two-run double down the left-field line.
The Bearcats regained the lead the following inning after Kiley Jones led off with the first of his two triples to center field on the day, scoring two batters later off a Chris Peters ground out.
UC increased its lead to 8-4 in the fifth. Lance Durham’s two run jack over the right-center field wall was followed by Beach Brooks’ home run to left field.
Down 9-4 entering the bottom half of the ninth, Joe Leonard doubled to center field and scored on Warner single up the middle, but Jake Geglein was able to strike out Lopez and get Mercurio to groundout to the shortstop to end the game.
The Panthers hit the road next, traveling to Akron, Ohio, for a 3 p.m. game on Tuesday, March 24. The Panthers and Zips met previously this year at the Papa John’s Classic in West Palm Beach, Fla. on March 8th, with Pitt winning 8-5.
