Croop Earns Bars Title at EAGL Championship

RALEIGH, N.C. — The University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team took fourth place at the Eastern Gymnastics League Championships held here today at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C. The Panthers set a season-high score of 48.875 on bars and posted a 194.675 for the meet, finishing just two-tenths of a point behind North Carolina for third place.
The host Wolfpack captured first place with a 195.700 with West Virginia following close behind at 195.500. New Hampshire was fifth with a score of 194.650, followed by Maryland in sixth with a 194.525, George Washington seventh with a 193.050 and Rutgers eighth with a 189.125.
Senior co-captain Alix Croop captured first place on the bars, tying a career-high mark of 9.850, tying NC State’s Lauren Deuser and Brittany Vontz as well as West Virginia's Mehgan Morris. Croop also tied for ninth on beam, posting a 9.800, the fourth-highest score of the day. On floor, she led the Panthers with a 9.800, tying for fourth.
On vault, sophomore Shannon Vafiadou led Pitt, finishing in a tie for fifth place with a 9.850, which tied her career-high in the event. Junior co-captain Dani Bryan tied for tenth with a 9.825 while junior Shannon McConnell tied her career-high of 9.800, finishing in a eight-way tie for 15th place.
Amy Varela fell just short of her career-high score on bars (9.850), finishing in a tie for 10th with a 9.800. Bryan and freshman Alicia Talucci both tied for 18th with a 9.750. Competing in her final EAGL Championship, senior Victoria McGuigan-Carl tied her career-high score of 9.725.
Talucci, the EAGL Rookie of the Year, posted the third-highest score of the day on the beam with a 9.825, tying for sixth overall to lead the squad. Vafiadou set a career-high with her ninth place finishing score of 9.800. Joining Vafiadou in a tie for ninth was Molly Moyer and Croop.
Behind Croop on floor was Talucci with a 9.775, 10th place finish. Talucci also finished third in the all-around, tallying a 39.100, the second best score of the season for her.
The 2009 season for the Panthers is now complete, with the team waiting for regional qualifying scores to be calculated, determining if they will compete in the NCAA Regional competition.
