PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh baseball team gears up for its first game after an impressive 7-2 roadtrip in Florida March 7-15. The Panthers and Penguins will meet today, March 17th at Eastwood Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
SCOUTING THE PENGUINS
The Penguins host Pitt in their home opener at Eastwood Field today, March 17th. Youngstown State went 1-8 on their spring trip through Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia last week. Their lone win came Sunday, March 15th, at Marshall when pitcher Cody Dearth carried them to a 2-1 victory In all three of their wins, the Penguins have scored the winning run in their final at bat.
PANTHERS AND PENGUINS
Next for the Panthers is a Youngstown State team that looks to improve on its slow start of 3-11 in the 2009 season. The Penguins beat the Panthers last time these two squared off by a score of 7-5, however the Panthers hold the overall series lead 11-6-1. Pitt has won the last nine of 10 games against the Penguins, with an average margin of victory of six runs.
ON THE REBOUND
After starting the season 1-3, the Panthers have climbed above the .500 mark and now stand at 8-5 overall. A 7-2 record over a 10-day span in Florida has put the Panthers in the top half of the Big East standings heading into the first weekend of conference play.
TOP THIS
Junior Chris Sedon put on quite a performance over the Panthers’ nine games in Florida. The leadoff second baseman hit .463 for the trip, hitting safely in eight of nine games, including mulitple hits in six games. He tallied 10 RBI, two doubles, one triple and two home runs, helping Pitt to a 7-2 mark during its trip down south. For the season, Sedon has recorded a hit in 12 of 13 games, including nine games with at least two hits. Four times this season he has tallied at least three hits, including a season-high of four in an 8-5 win over Akron on March 8.
TAKIN CARE OF BUSINESS
The Panthers competed in the Papa John’s Classic for the third straight season, posting a 7-2 record in 10 days of action in the Sunshine State. Pitt won its first four games in Florida before falling to No. 6 Miami, 11-6, in Miami. The Panthers’ only other loss came against Ohio State, ranked 30th at the time. Pitt ended its trip with a three-game winning streak, including its third extra innings game of the season, a 3-2 win over North Dakota State on Sunday, March 15.
