IRONDALE, Ala.—Coming back late in the contest, the University of Pittsburgh softball team won a 5-2 decision over Alabama State, in its second game of the Magic City Classic, at Shea Brother Complex. Pitt evened its record at 6-6 with the victory.
Trailing 2-0, Pitt tied the game with two runs off three hits in the fourth inning. The Panthers got on the board when senior Samantha Card doubled through centerfield. The hit sent sophomore Reba Tutt home, after she tallied a lead-off single. Card then scored the tying run when freshman Ciera Damon tallied a two-out single to centerfield.
Later in the seventh, freshman Kelli Gaynor scored the winning run of the game off a sacrifice groundball from pinch hitter Lauren Davis. Next, Tutt would record a RBI in the contest with a single to left field, as Davis scored. Card’s single on the next at-bat drove in Tutt for the 5-2 victory.
Tutt was 2-for-4 with two runs, while Card was 2-for-4 with one run in the ballgame.
ASU scored a run in the first inning off a Pitt error and a hit, while taking a 2-0 advantage in the third with another hit and a Pitt error.
Sophomore Alyssa O’Connell (3-0) pitched her third win of the season, giving up just three hits and striking out five in the contest.
Pitt’s game against UAB scheduled for this evening was called off. The Panthers face Michigan State at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
