PITTSBURGH - Freshman Alicia Talucci was named Gymnast of the Week after her performance this past weekend against Michigan State. The award is the third honor this season for Talucci, who has already received the EAGL Rookie of the Week honor twice.
Despite Pitt’s loss against rival Michigan State on Feb. 20, Talucci set career-high marks in almost every event and won the all-around competition for the second time in the past three meets. She finished with a career-high of 39.250 in the all-around, which was only her third time competing in the event this season and an EAGL high for the weekend.
In addition, Talucci set career-highs on the beam and the bars. She earned a score of 9.875 on the beam and 9.775 on bars. In the floor exercise, she tied her career-high score of 9.800.
Entering this Saturday’s meet against Denver, Talucci is ranked sixth on the vault in the EAGL. Although she has earned exceptionally high marks in the all-around this season, she has yet to be ranked in the EAGL or region due to the calculation of the regional qualifying score, or RQS.
Qualification for regional competition is based on a team's and an all-around competitor's six best regular-season meet scores, of which three must be from away meets. To obtain the regional qualifying score (RQS), the high score is eliminated and the remaining five scores are averaged.
Talucci and the Panthers will be in action again this weekend, competing in their final home meet of the 2009 season against Denver on Saturday, Feb. 28. Start time is set for 7 p.m. inside Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers will also honor their four seniors, Anya Chayka, Alix Croop, Andrea Konesky and Victoria McGuigan-Carl at the conclusion of the meet.
