Women's Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. —Providence scored a goal in the game's 13th minute and held off a hard-charging Pitt women's soccer team to register a 1-0 victory over the visiting Panthers Friday night at Glay Field. Pitt drops to 7-5-5 overall and 2-3-5 in the Big East while Providence improves to 8-7-3 overall and 3-5-2 in the Big East.
Pitt is tied with West Virginia for fifth place in the Big East American Division with 14 points. Connecticut is in fourth place with 15 points and St. John's third with 16 points.
The host Friars scored at the 12:34 mark when Tara Ricciardi found the back of the net after assists by Caitlin Hostetler and Jill Camburn.
Pitt had several scoring opportunities throughout the game, firing 16 shots including nine on the PC goal. Pitt also took seven corner kicks to PC's three. The Panthers outshot Providence 11-10 in the second half. Junior Liz Carroll finished with four shots including three on goal and junior defender Kat Weiler had three shots for Pitt.
Providence goalkeeper Jill Schott totaled nine saves on the day. Pitt goalkeeper Morie Kephart finished with seven saves in the match.
Pitt plays its final regular season game at Connecticut on Sunday, Oct. 25. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
