PITTSBURGH - The 2010 Pitt gymnastics schedule, announced by head coach Debbie Yohman on Wednesday, features some of the top competition in the country.
"We have a tremendous schedule this year," Yohman said. "Our goal is to win EAGLs, therefore, we want to compete against the best, which will help us to perform at a high level down the stretch.
"The team is excited about our goals this year and we bring a combination of things to the table that we haven't in the past. This group is ready to step out and declare those intentions."
The Panthers start the unofficial season with their annual Blue Gold Intersquad meet on Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House. Pitt opens up the regular season with rival West Virginia in a 7 p.m. contest on Jan. 16.
Other home meets for Pitt include Ohio State on Jan. 22; a quad meet on Feb. 5 with Iowa State, Rutgers and Brockport; a Feb. 13 meeting with Penn State and a quad meet on March 5 with George Washington, Western Michigan and Penn.
"West Virginia and Penn State are always tough competitors for us," Yohman said. "And, Ohio State's program is on the rise so we have some great teams coming to Fitzgerald Field House this season."
Pitt's first road trip takes the team to New Hampshire on Jan. 30. On Feb. 19, the Panthers face Maryland, George Washington and William & Mary in College Park, Md., and then stay on the road Feb. 27 for a meet at N.C. State. Trips to Arkansas (March 12) and Michigan State (March 20) round out the regular season for the Panthers.
"Our meets with New Hampshire and Michigan State are always so close," Yohman continued. "N.C. State is always on a national level, and Arkansas finished in the top four last season so we are looking at a very exciting and tough schedule ahead. Our schedule isn't easy, but we feel it is perfect for helping us prepare for those final goals."
EAGL Championships will be held on the New Hampshire campus on March 27. NCAA Regionals are set for April 10 and the NCAA Championships will be held at the University of Florida on April 22-24.
