Women's Volleyball Falls 3-1 In Cross-Town Rivalry

PITTSBURGH—Pitt’s women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match to cross-town rival Duquesne at Fitzgerald Field House, this evening. The Panthers fell to 3-4 on the season with scores of 17-25, 24-26, 25-10 and 19-25.
Junior Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) led all with 17 kills in the match, while senior Jessica Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) had a match-high 10 block assists.
Additionally, senior Kelly Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield/Pacific) recorded a double-double in the match with 14 kills and 13 digs and junior Michelle Rossi (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) led all with 22 digs.
After starting the match as a middle hitter, Dooley was moved to the outside in the third set where she recorded a set-high six kills and added two block assists.
Pitt opened the third set with an 11-2 run, that began with two kills from Campbell. Duquesne (7-1) had a slight run of their own in the set, but a block from Moses and freshman Allyson Hodnik (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) gave the Panthers a 13-5 lead.
Later in the set, Dooley recorded a kill that pushed Pitt ahead 17-10. The Panthers would then go on to hold serve for the next nine points and earn the win at 25-10.
Hodnik entered the match in the first set and recorded seven assists on the eight kills in that set. However, Pitt also committed 10 attack errors and three service errors for a season low -.045 hitting percentage.
In the second set Pitt held an early lead, but saw it slip away as the Dukes went on an 8-4 run to take the lead at 12-11 off a service error.
Later in the set, Dooley closed the gap with a block at the 19-22 mark. Pitt then tied it at 24-24 with a block from Moses, however the Panthers were unable to stop two kills as the Dukes took a 26-24 victory in the second set.
After the first two sets, Campbell led the Panthers with eight kills and Hodnik had 20 assists.
In the final set of the match, Campbell tied the match at 9-9 when she received a set from Hodnik. Trailing, Pitt kept it close and forced a Duquesne timeout when Hodnik and Moses recorded a block at 20-17.
The Dukes then came out of the timeout and ended the match with a 5-2 run for the victory.
Hodnik recorded a career-high 45 assists in the match.
The Panthers head west on Friday, Sept. 12, for the two-day Loyola Marymount Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif.
