LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Senior Kelly Campbell and junior Meagan Dooley recorded nine kills each, as the women’s volleyball team fell 3-0 to UC Irvine, this afternoon, in the Sheraton Four Points LAX/LMU Volleyball Classic held at Burns Recreation Center. Pitt was outlasted with scores of 20-25, 16-25 and 24-26.
Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield/Pacific) recorded a set-high with seven of her nine kills in the third set. Campbell also tallied a .545 hitting percentage in that contest, while Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) recorded a .412 hitting clip in the match.
The final set of the match included seven ties, as the Panthers (3-6) trailed by four before taking a timeout in the contest. Following the break, Campbell tallied two kills and shared a block with senior Jessica Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) to take a one-point deficit at 16-15.
A few plays later Moses combined on a block with senior Nicole Taurence (Trenton, Mich./Trenton) to tie the set at 18. Despite a short run from UC Irvine, Pitt compiled a 4-1 run of its own to tie it at 22, again.
Freshman Hannah Swysgood (Sunbury, Ohio/Big Walnut) gave Pitt a 24-23 lead with a kill three plays later. However, UC Irvine called a timeout and knotted the set with a kill of their own.
UC Irvine then won the match point with two blocks on Panther attacks.
Taurence recorded eight assists in the first set, while junior Michelle Rossi (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) had seven digs in the second set.
The Panthers face San Jose State at 8 p.m., this evening in their final match of the Sheraton Four Points LAX/LMU Volleyball Classic.
