PITTSBURGH--Playing through the rain, Pitt's softball team falls in a heartfelt 1-0 decision to Notre Dame at Trees Field, this afternoon. Pitt slipped to 29-23 overall and 10-9 in the Big East, while the Irish improved to 36-17-1 on the year and 13-6 in the conference.
With zero outs on the board, freshman Reba Tutt (Culpeper, Va./Highland) moved senior Mary Hecker (Roseville, Calif./Roseville) and junior Samantha Card (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes/Florida International) with a sacrifice hit in the infield. Next sophomore Megan Livesey (Livingston, N.J./The Montclair Kimberly Academy) was hit in the hand by a pitch to load the bases.
However, all three were left stranded as Notre Dame recorded the next two putouts and earned the one-run win.
Hecker smacked a single to left field after an illegal pitch gave her another chance as the leadoff. Card then followed with a single up the middle.
Earlier in the game, Livesey recorded Pitt's first hit of the game in the bottom of the second inning when she hopped the ball to left field and moved Card to second after she was walked with four balls.
Then with just one out on the board, Card and Livesey each stole a base to move into scoring position. Sophomore Kayla Zinger (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) bunted a few pitches later and Card slid in under the catcher. However, Card had to return to third when the ball was ruled dead. The Panthers were then retired.
The Irish scored the lone run of the game with a one-out homer in the top of the fourth.
Freshman Cory Berliner (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) tossed the complete game, allowing seven hits in the contest.
