The Panthers dropped the contest by a count of 15-5, allowing the Pirates to take all three games of the series and giving Pitt its fifth defeat in as many games.
Adding to the Panthers' woes, starting pitcher Brian Chrisman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Marshall), one of Pitt's top hurlers this season, went down with an injury after retiring the first two batters in the bottom of the first inning. Mike Wood (Endicott, N.Y./Endicott Union) came on in relief of Chrisman and ended the inning by forcing a ground out to shortstop Danny Lopez (
Wood would not be so fortunate when the Pirates took their turn at the plate in the bottom of the fourth, however. Finding themselves down 2-1, Seton Hall unloaded four runs on the Panthers as Wood's control seemed to deteriorate. Pitt's hurler walked three SHU batters and was charged with two wild pitches, both of which allowed Pirate runners to advance. He would pick up the loss, dropping his record to 0-2 this season.
After a scoreless fifth frame, the Hall pulled away from the Panthers with a two-run seventh inning that was sandwiched in between two more four-run outbursts, giving the Pirates a total of 15 runs on the day and tying the highest number of scores allowed by Pitt all season.
The Panthers will look to rebound Tuesday when they return to Trees Field for a showdown with cross town rival Duquesne. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
