LORETTO, Pa.--The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped a 6-0 decision to St. Francis, in the first game of its doubleheader this afternoon. Pitt slipped to 29-21 on the year, while the Red Flash improved to 21-32.
Freshman Cory Berliner (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) fell to 16-10 on the season, allowing nine hits and five earned runs in 4.2 innings of work.
St. Francis jumped out to an early lead with two early runs in the first inning. They later added another four runs in the fifth off six hits.
Pitt left six base runners stranded in the contest. The Panthers best opportunity was in the third inning, where Pitt left three runners on. The bases were loaded after senior Kelly Stiles (Thurmont, Md./Catocin) led off with a single and freshman Ashley Amistade (Washington, Pa./Trinity) recorded a two-out single. Senior Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) then reached on an error, but a Pitt strikeout would end the chance.
In the second inning, junior Samantha Card (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes/Florida International) was thrown out at home when trying to get an extra base, after sophomore Megan Livesey (Livingston, N.J./The Montclair Kimberly Academy) singled.
Dignon recorded three putouts and two assists, while Card was 2-for-3 at the plate.
