LORETTO, Pa.--Three Panthers hit solo homers, as the University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped a 5-4 decision in eight innings to St. Francis, in the second game of its doubleheader this afternoon. Pitt slipped to 29-22 on the year, while the Red Flash improved to 22-32.
The Panthers came from behind to tie the game at 4-4, as senior Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) tallied her sixth home run of the season with a shot to left field.
The Panther then held off an attack by St. Francis as senior Kelly Stiles (Thurmont, Md./Catocin) caught a fly ball in right field with two runners on.
In the extra inning Pitt was held hitless, while the Red Flash used two hits to score a run and earn the eventual win.
Sophomore Kayla Zinger (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) was walked with the bases juiced, resulting in the first run of the day for the Panthers. Dignon scored following a lead-off infield single in the fourth inning.
Freshman Reba Tutt (Culpeper, Va./Highland) then tallied the second run with a lead-off bomb through center field in the fifth. Senior Mary Hecker (Roseville, Calif./Roseville) followed in the same fashion in the sixth with a lead-off home run of her own. Both smacked their fourth homers of the season.
Pitt trailed 4-0 in the contest, after St. Francis recorded two-two-run innings. Zinger fell to 11-11 on the mound, giving up 11 hits and four earned runs in 6.2 innings.
Dignon chipped in seven assists defensively and was 2-for-4 with two runs in the game.
Pitt returns to Trees Field on Saturday, May 3, with a doubleheader against Notre Dame at 11 a.m.
