"Both girls have become tremendous competitors throughout the year," said Pitt gymnastics head coach Debbie Yohman. "It was a great experience for both of them and it's a sign of that they will have an impact on the regional and national levels for years to come."
The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional received an automatic berth to the national championships in Athens, Georgia, April 24-26, hosted by the University of Georgia.
In addition, the event winners at the regional championships advanced to the national championships (in that event only) if they were not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.
Vafiadou (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) had her best event on the floor exercise, scoring a 9.625. She then took to the uneven parallel bars and balance beam and posted scores of 9.525 and 9.100, respectively.
In the all-around, Vafiadou finished with a score of 37.20.
