LAS VEGAS, Nev.--Senior Mary Hecker tallied another home run, as the University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped an 8-1 contest to No. 16 Hawai'I in its final game of the UNLV Eller Media Classic. The Panthers fell to 7-6 on the season, while the Rainbow Wahine improved to 13-4.
Hecker (Roseville, Calif./Roseville) hit a leadoff home run against the wind in the fourth inning, cutting Hawai'I's lead to 2-1. Hecker was 3-for-3 in the game and posted a .429 batting average on the weekend. She also led the week with three RBI and tallied 14 putouts in the five games.
However, Hecker's homer would be the lone run for the Panthers as the Rainbow Wahine would score another six runs, four earned, in the game.
After the first two runs were scored for Hawai'i in the first inning, junior Samantha Card (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes/Florida International) got the Panthers out of trouble by firing a pass to senior Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) at second to halt a potential stolen base with runners on the corners.
Later in the fifth, Dignon made a play that got the Panthers out of a jam when an error on the previous player put runners on the corners with two outs. She caught a high ball that was popped up just behind short stop for the final out.
Freshman Cory Berliner (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) allowed four earned runs and 12 hits in her 6.1 innings, and slipped to 5-2 on the mound.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday, March 8, against Indiana State at 11 a.m., in their first game of the Univ. of Kansas Tournament.
