Backyard Brawl Notes
PITTSBURGH--The Pitt gymnastics team (1-8, 1-2 EAGL) will host conference rival West Virginia at Fitzgerald Field House on Saturday, March 1 at 7 p.m. The Panthers are coming off a tough conference loss to George Washington.
Junior Anya Chayka (Germantown, Md./Montgomery) was the only Panther to capture an event title against the Colonials. Chayka tied for first on beam where she registered a score of 9.800 for her performance.
On bars, Alix Croop (Allentown, Pa./Bridgeway Academy) tied for third with a team-high score of 9.725. Croop also registered a team-high 9.675 on the floor exercise, where she placed fourth.
Other top notch performances came from Dani Bryan (Germantown, Md./Northwest), who placed second on vault with a 9.825, and a third place performance on beam came from Sarah Thompson (Shokan, N.Y./Onteora). Thompson scored a career-high 9.775 on the event.
Shannon Vafiadou (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) scored a career-high 38.000 in the all-around, placing second. She also set career-high scores on vault, bars and beam. On vault, she scored a 9.800, tying for third place. Vafiadou registered a 9.625 on bars, and her performance on beam gave her a fifth-place 9.725.
The Mountaineers are on a five meet winning streak, which began when they defeated EAGL opponent North Carolina, who was ranked 19th nationally.
West Virginia is the only undefeated team in the EAGL conference, holding an impressive 4-0 EAGL record and an overall record of 10-7.
