PITTSBURGH--Senior Diana Andreyko garnered All-Pitt Invitational MVP honors, this afternoon at Fitzgerald Field House, as Pitt's women's volleyball team won their tournament with a 3-0 win over Buffalo. The Panthers were victorious with scores of 30-24, 30-24 and 30-19.
Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) was named the All-Pitt Invitational MVP after leading the Panthers in kills (55), kills per game (5.0) and total attacks (125) during the two-day tournament. She now sits in third place on the all-time kills list with 1540 career kills.
During the tournament, Andreyko also chipped in 27 digs, six total blocks and an ace on the weekend.
In addition to Andreyko, juniors Kelly Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield/Pacific) and Jessica Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) were selected to the all-tournament team. Campbell boasted 49 kills with a 4.45 kill per game average, while adding 41 digs, serving four aces and chipping in eight total blocks.
Moses had an impressive weekend, leading the squad with a .561 hitting average. She recorded 37 kills and a 3.36 kill per game average. Moses also led the Panthers with 10 block assists and tied the team lead with 11 total blocks.
The Panthers, who improved to 5-5 on the season and finished 3-0 in their tournament, earning wins over George Mason (3-1), UAB (3-1) and Buffalo (3-0).
As a team the Panthers recorded four blocks, as opposed to Buffalo (1-11) with zero. Both sophomore Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and junior Stephanie Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) chipped in two block assists.
In game one of the Pitt-Buffalo match-up, freshman Emily Burke (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) recorded 15 assists off the team's 16 kills. She posted 44 assists in the contest.
Later, the Panthers had to come from behind in the second game, tying the score at 10-10 to force a Buffalo timeout on the next play. Following the break, Campbell recorded her fourth ace of the match.
The Panthers lead wouldn't last long, as they slipped to a 21-19 deficit on a Pitt attack error. However, Campbell and Moses gave the Panthers a 25-24 lead, when they rejected a Bulls' attack.
On the next play, Moses rose in the middle for a kill that forced another Buffalo timeout. The Panthers went on to win the contest. After two games, Moses led the team with 10 kills and a .714 hitting percentage.
In game three, Ross recorded an ace for a 15-11 advantage. A few plays later sophomore Michelle Rossi (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) garnered back-to-back aces for the Panthers, extending the lead to 22-14 before the eventual win.
Pitt recorded a season-high 14 block assists and eight aces against the Bulls.
The Panthers travel to San Diego, Calif., next, as they face San Diego on Friday, Sept. 14, at 10:00 p.m., in the first game of the San Diego Tournament.
