SAN DIEGO, Calif.--The Pitt women's volleyball team fell 3-0 to No.18 San Diego at Jenny Craig Pavilion, in the Panthers first match of the San Diego Invitational. The Toreros won with scores of 30-21, 30-28 and 30-20.
Recording her fifth double-double of the season, senior Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) recorded 13 kills and 10 digs in the match.
Ranked 12th in the NCAA for assists per game, freshman Emily Burke (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) recorded 29 assists in the contest, while junior Nicole Taurence (Trenton, Mich./Trenton) entered the game and chipped in nine.
On the defensive end, sophomore Michelle Rossi (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) totaled 22 digs, while junior Jessica Moses (North Olmsted, Ohio/Lutheran West) assisted on a team-high four blocks.
Game two was Pitt's closest game of the match, as the Panthers and Toreros tied the game 13 times with four lead changes.
Junior Stephanie Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) gave Pitt the first lead of game with a 14-13 kill from Burke. Soon the Panthers trailed 25-22 and called a timeout. Following the break, Burke set up Ross for another kill. Andreyko's kill two plays later tied the game at 25.
The teams would go back and forth with one point leads, but eventually tying it again at 28 was Andreyko. However, San Diego would rally the next two points with kills.
Pitt took the early lead in game one with back-to-back kills from junior Kelly Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield/Pacific) and Moses. The Panthers later trailed 10-7, but pulled within one, 11-10, after a San Diego service error.
However, Pitt would have to take a timeout after a 22-14 attack error, but wouldn't overcome the deficit.
In the third game, Campbell led the team with five kills, posting 11 in the game.
Pitt faces No. 5 UCLA at 3 p.m. on Saturday, in their second game of the San Diego Invitational.
