PITTSBURGH--Senior Diana Andreyko and junior Kelly Campbell record another set of double-doubles, as Pitt's women's volleyball team picked up its second win of the day in the Pitt Invitational at Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers were victorious in a 3-1 rout over UAB with scores of 29-31, 30-19, 32-30 and 30-16.
Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) posted 20 kills and 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season, while Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield/Pacific) garnered her second of the day and fifth of the season. Campbell's totals included 21 kills, 18 digs, three blocks and three assists.
On the season, Campbell leads the squad with a 4.30 hitting clip and 142 kills.
Pitt (4-5) out-hit the Blazers (5-3), posting a .271 hitting percentage to a .158. The Panthers held UAB to a stingy .081 in game three.
In a match that featured multiple ties and several lead changes, the Panthers' earned their first lead of the third game, 11-10, after sophomore Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) recorded back-to-back kills. The advantage was extended to 13-10 after Moses served an ace.
Down in the match, Pitt tied the game at 18 with a block assist between Campbell and junior Jessica Moses (North Olmsted, Ohio/Lutheran West).
Later a back row attack from Andreyko tied the contest at 21, before junior Stephanie Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) garnered the kill for Pitt and lifted the squad to a 23-22 lead.
After trailing 28-24, Pitt mounted a comeback and tied the score at 28 after UAB hit the ball wide. The Panthers and Blazers then teetered points back and forth before Pitt would earn the go-ahead point and game-winning points off UAB attack errors.
Campbell's ace in game four gave Pitt a 10-5 lead and forced a Blazer timeout. However, UAB would go on a 7-2 run and tie the match at 12 before Pitt would score again.
Known to make a run of their own, the Panthers went back up 20-14 following a Blazer hitting error. Six points later, Campbell put Pitt ahead, 26-14, with a deep shot in the corner.
The Panthers went on to give up just two more points before winning the match.
The Panthers and UAB played a close first match, as Campbell forced a side out with a hard shot from the outside to give Pitt a 9-8 lead. The Panthers then took an 18-14 lead when Dooley recorded a kill from the middle due to a set up from freshman Emily Burke (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral).
The Blazers pulled within one, 21-20, but a kill from Andreyko on the left side put the Panthers back up two points.
Later, Pitt had to come from behind when Burke dumped a shot past UAB's blockers to pull within one, 26-25. Then down 29-26, both Andreyko and Campbell rallied kills for the Panthers to bring them within one point again. A Blazer blocking error on Moses attack, set up a tied game when UAB followed with a hitting error on the next ball. However, the Blazers would win the next two points and game one.
Pitt opened game two slow, but a kill from Andreyko gave Pitt its first lead at 14-12. Back-to-back kills from Dooley extended the lead to 16-12 and forced a UAB timeout following a 6-0 run by the Panthers.
Campbell floated a ball between two defenders for a kill and a 22-17 Pitt lead. Dooley then assisted on back-to-back blocks, lifting Pitt to a 28-18 lead and the eventual win of game two.
The Panthers will conclude action in the Pitt Invitational against Buffalo, at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, at Fitzgerald Field House.
