PITTSBURGH--Junior Kelly Campbell led Pitt with a double-double as Pitt's volleyball team won its first game of the Pittsburgh Invitational against George Mason, 3-1, this afternoon at Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers won the match with scores of 30-22, 30-27, 27-30 and 30-25.
Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield/Pacific) recorded a double-double with 18 kills and 16 digs. This is her fourth double-double of the season.
Senior Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led the team with 21 kills, while sophomore Nicole Taurence (Trenton, Mich./Trenton) recorded a game-leading 35 assists.
Pitt (3-5) and George Mason (4-3) kept the game close through the first few points. A big block from Andreyko tied the game at 16-16. Then on a play that looked like a lost point, junior Jessica Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) passed a ball off the net, allowing Andreyko to make the kill and give Pitt an 18-16 lead. The Panthers went on to take a 24-20 lead after a back and forth volley resulted in a long attack for George Mason.
The Panthers earned the first game 30-22 after Campbell blocked a Patriot attack.
In game two, the Panthers went up 13-9 following an Andreyko kill from the outside. George Mason cut the lead to 14-13 after recording its second ace of the game. Pitt went on to take a three point lead again, but the Patriots battled back and took a 23-21 advantage.
Freshman setter Emily Burke (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) then entered the game and recorded five assists, as the Panthers went on to win the game 30-27.
Moses gave Pitt its first point of game three after two Panther errors gave the Patriots a 2-0 lead. The game was tied 9-9 after junior Nicole Taurence (Trenton, Mich./Trenton) set up sophomore Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) for the kill.
Andreyko's kill then gave the Panthers an 18-15 lead, as the ball rolled off the finger tips of the George Mason blockers. The Patriots posted a 9-2 run, taking a 24-20 lead before Campbell gave Pitt another kill in the game.
The Panthers rallied the next four out of five points including a monster block from Moses and sophomore Melissa Stadelman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carrick). However, George Mason would make another charge and pick up the win.
Pitt jumped out to a 9-3 lead and maintained a cushion through game four. With the score at 25-19 in favor of the Panthers, Burke set up Dooley in the middle for a huge kill in between two Patriot defenders. Campbell's block then gave Pitt the victory, 30-25, and match point.
Pitt will be back in action at 7:30 p.m., as they face UAB in the fourth game of the Pitt Invitational.
