PITTSBURGH - University of Pittsburgh head gymnastics coach Debbie Yohman announced the release of the team's 2007-08 schedule. Pitt will compete in 11 contests total this season, including five meets at the Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers open the year when Kent State and Big Ten Conference powerhouse Penn State visit the Field House on Jan. 11. Other home opponents include EAGL foe Rutgers(Feb. 1), Florida (Feb. 10) and West Virginia (Mar. 1). In addition to those dual meets, Pitt's final home contest will be a quad meet against North Carolina, Cornell and Temple (Mar. 22).
Coach Yohman's squad will also take part in six away meets. The first competition away from the Field House is against Michigan State (Jan. 19). The Panthers then head to New Hampshire (Jan. 26). Pitt will also travel to Ohio State (Feb. 16), George Washington (Feb. 24) and NCAA qualifier Denver (Mar. 8) before a quad meet at Maryland with Michigan and Temple (Mar. 15).
"We have a very powerful schedule that takes us out of the region for six away meets, including three teams that appeared at nationals last season," said Yohman. "We've elevated the quality of our competition in an effort to distinguish our program as one of the best in the country."
The Panther's will take the short trip south to nearby Morgantown, W.Va., for the 2008 EAGL Championships (Mar. 29). Last year at the EAGL's, three gymnasts were selected to the all-conference team as the team captured a fourth place finish, as recent graduate Andrea Arlotta was named a first team All-EAGL selection on three events and in the all-around. Returning gymnasts Dani Bryan (Germantown, Md./Northwest) and Samantha DeBone (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) received first-team honors on the vault and balance beam, respectively.
