PITTSBURGH-- The Pitt women's soccer team registered its third shutout of the season with a 1-0 decision over Ohio University at Founders Field. The Panthers improve to 5-3-0 while the Bobcats fall to 0-5-2 overall.
"We came back today after a tough match against West Virginia on Friday and made a great effort to battle it out again today," Pitt Head Coach Sue-Moy Chin said. "We need to keep improving as we continue deeper into Big East play this coming weekend."
Pitt's lone goal came from sophomore Ashley Habbel (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) in the 30th minute. Freshman Kat Weiler's (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) direct kick was headed by Christina Nicassio (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) who then headed the ball to Habbel, who redirected the ball into the net for the Panther goal.
The score marked Habbel's 10th career goal which moves her into fifth place on Pitt's all-time career list for goals scored. The record is 18, held by Cande Ruiz (1998-2001). Habbel's 10 goals and three career assists give her 23 points as she approaches the career list for most points. The score was Habbel's team leading third game winning goal of the season.
Goalkeeper Alison Finch (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) recorded her sixth career shutout and now has a total of 118 career saves.
Pitt will continue Big East play this weekend when it hosts Syracuse at Founders Field on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. The Panthers will then travel to Jamaica, N.Y. on Sunday, Sept. 30 to play St. John's in another Big East matchup.
