Three Panthers are making a big first impression in the minor leagues. Paul Nardozzi, Peter Parise and Kyle Landis all have been putting a new spin on the term "hit the ground running." They aren't hitting or running, but neither are the batters that face them. These three excelled as Panthers and have been continuing their success with their current teams.
Paul Nardozzi was the ace at Pitt and is quickly becoming an ace in the minor leagues with the Oneonta Tigers. Nardozzi stands at 1-1 with a 3.54 ERA in 20.1 innings pitched, striking out 17 and allowing only one home run. His win comes as a starter and his lone loss comes as a reliever. Left-handed hitters have had a particularly hard time hitting this right-handed hurler, with a batting average of only .143 and just five hits. Right handed hitters haven't seen great success either, with only 12 hits in 11 innings, being struck out 11 times.
Peter Parise is the all-time leader for hits at Pitt; however it has been his arm and pitching skills that have been highlighted in the minors with the Batavia Muckdogs. Parise holds a 1-0 record with a 2.21 ERA in 20.1 innings pitched, striking out 11, while not allowing any home runs. As a reliever, his opposition has a .231 batting average and he has a 1.86 ERA, striking out five, allowing only two earned runs. He has had three shutout performances out of his six appearances and has only allowed only two walks.
Kyle Landis has proven that he was prepared for his jump to professional baseball as he holds an impressive 0.00 ERA with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. He has 14 strike-outs in 14.1 innings pitched, and batters facing him have an abysmal .212 batting average. This right handed rising star has given up only 11 hits in his first month as a pro ball player, only three of which were by left handed hitters.
The Pitt Baseball program certainly has to be proud of the Draft Class of 2007, with these fantastic three and others, look for them to make big strides as they continue their success.
