BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Pitt baseball team (27-25 overall, 15-11 Big East) will begin Big East Championship play Tuesday, May 22, against the USF Bulls at 5 p.m. at KeySpan Park.
Pitt enters the tournament as the No. 4 seed, while USF is seeded fifth in the eight-team tournament. The Panthers surprised some teams on the way to the double-elimination tournament as they were picked to finish ninth in the preseason by league coaches.
Pitcher Paul Nardozzi (SR/Victor, N.Y./Victor) will get the start for the Panthers, leading all starters with a 3.93 ERA and a 5-5 record on the year. Nardozzi recently became Pitt's all-time strikeouts leader, breaking a record that stood for 39 years.
Also on the cusp of a milestone is outfielder Peter Parise (SR/Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), who tied the all-time hits mark with 250, in Pitt's regular season finale.
The winner of the game against Pitt and USF will play against the winner of St. John's vs. Connecticut on Wednesday at 8 p.m. and the loser of the two contests will play Wednesday at 1 p.m., in the double-elimination tournament.
All Pitt games from the tournament will be broadcast live by Bill Hillgrove and Dick Groat on www.pittsburghpanthers.com. Wednesday's game will also be broadcast on FOX Sports Radio 970 AM.
