
PITT BASEBALL DROPS 5-2 GAME TO RUTGERS

PITTSBURGH - The Pitt baseball team (24-23, 13-9 Big East) fell, 5-2, to Rutgers (33-16, 18-5 Big East) Saturday afternoon at Trees Field in the second game of the three-game series.
Dan Williams (JR/Berwyn, Pa./Episcopal Academy) hit 1 for 2 on the day with a homerun to left field in the fourth inning. Paul Nardozzi (SR/Victor, N.Y./Victor) pitched 8.0 innings for the Panthers, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out seven in the loss.
The Scarlet Knights grabbed the 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a Tim Querns single to right field, bringing home Jon Gossard from third.
The Panthers responded in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game when Seth Button (SR/Elk Lake, Pa./Gloucester College) scored from third on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Williams helped Pitt take the lead, 2-1, on his solo homer to left field.
Rutgers added a run in the sixth on a solo homerun by Dave Williams. Big East Preseason Player of the Year Todd Frazier also homered to left field in the seventh, giving the visitors the 3-2 lead.
In the top of the ninth, Rutgers solidified the win with a two-run inning. Both runs were scored on a throwing error by the Pitt shortstop, scoring both Donny Callahan and Querns for the 5-2 victory.
The series wraps up Sunday at noon at Trees Field. Friday night, Pitt earned a guaranteed spot in the Big East Tournament with a West Virginia loss. The Panthers have four conference games remaining to determine seeding in the tournament, which will be held May 22-26 at KeySpan Park in Brooklyn, N.Y.
