PITTSBURGH-A single to right field from junior Valerie Mihalik in the bottom of the seventh sent the Panthers into eight innings in game one of Pitt's softball doubleheader against Penn State, as Pitt fell 3-1 at Trees Field.
The Panther got offensively charged in the seventh when Mihalik (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) tallied a two-out single to right field, tying the game at 2-2. Scoring runs were senior Joey Scarf (Humble, Texas/Humble), who tallied a lead-off single and junior Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin).
Sophomore Alex Shoemaker (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) tallied the Panther's first hit of the game with a one-out shot to right field in the second inning.
Senior Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) and Dignon recorded two putouts a piece, securing the left infield. Dignon made a good glove play in the fourth when she caught a line ball just above her calf.
Penn State's pitcher hit a one-pitch homer to right field, scoring two runs in the first inning. The Nittany Lions tallied the game-winning run in the extra inning after a passed ball placed a runner on third and a fly ball to center field sent her home.
On the mound, senior Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) pitched five inning allowing just three hits. Pitching three innings of relief, senior Laura Belardinelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) allowed one hit, while striking out four batters.
