ROCK HILL, S.C.-- Two three-run innings sinks Pitt softball, as the Panthers fall 8-1 to Winthrop in game one of a doubleheader at Terry Field, this afternoon.
Junior Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) scored Pitt's lone run in the fourth inning. Dignon led off the inning with an infield single and then stole second. She was then sent home when senior Joey Scarf (Humble, Texas/Humble) doubled to left field.
Most of Winthrop's runs were scored during two three-run innings. The Eagles scored three runs off five hits in the second inning, and then scored three more runs off two hits and two Pitt errors in he fourth. Winthrop also added insurance runs in the third and sixth.
Pitt's defense in the sixth kept Winthrop from adding more runs as they stranded three runners on base.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Schuster (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) pitched 1.1 innings in the loss and falls to 1-1 on the season. Freshman Kayla Zinger (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) entered the game and struck out three batters while giving up eight hits in 4.2 innings of relief.
