Murphy Scores Winning Run In Extra Inning

ROCK HILL, S.C.--Junior Kelly Murphy scores her first run of the season to lift Pitt's softball team to a 2-1 victory over Akron in the first game of the Winthrop adidas Invitational at Terry Field. The Panthers improve to 5-11, while the Zips fall to 3-5 on the season.

In the extra inning, Murphy (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) scored the winning run off a double to left center by senior Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova). Hellon recorded her third double and sixth RBI of the season on the play.

Sophomore Samantha Card (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes/Florida International) tied the game in the seventh to force the extra inning. Card singled to center field, leading off the inning, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Joey Scarf (Humble, Texas/Humble). A few batters later, junior Kelly Stiles (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) earned a RBI with a single to right field, scoring Card. Pitt stranded two runners in that inning, but scored one run off two hits.

In the bottom of the eighth, Akron placed a runner on third, but Pitt held off the tying run with a fielded ground ball by Hellon. The Zips ended the pitching dual earlier in the fifth with a run off two singles.

Winning her first game of the season on the mound, freshman Kayla Zinger (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) recorded five strikeouts and allowed just four hits in the game.

Pitt continues action in the Winthrop adidas Invitational with a 4 p.m. contest against Furman.
