Three-Run Inning Leads Pitt Softball To Split

MT. PLEASANT, S.C.--Pitt's three-run inning leads the softball team to a split against College of Charleston, as the Panthers win game two, 3-1, this afternoon at Patriots Point. Pitt improves to 3-10 on the season, while the Cougars slipped to 9-10 on the year.

Pitt's big inning came in the top of the third where the Panthers scored three runs of four hits and two College of Charleston errors.

Senior Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) led off the inning with a single and stole second base. Hellon then scored when classmate Morgan Howard's (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) bunt was properly placed and then muffled on a throwing error by the third baseman.

Morgan scored next on a one-out wild pitch to sophomore Samantha Card (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes/Florida International). Card then sent a single up the middle that sent junior Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) home for the third run. Dignon singled to get on base earlier in the inning.

Pitt's pitching held off the Cougars. Coming off a season-high 12 strikeouts in her last game, senior Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) set the tone in the second inning when she fanned three of the four batters, including two looking.

The College of Charleston then converted on two hits and had three runners with a two outs and a hopeful scoring opportunity in front of them. However, Bostick added another strikeout to her total and stranded all three runners.

Later in the fourth, Bostick hit the first batter with a pitch and a one-out error placed a second runner on base. However, Bostick retired the next two batters, swinging. Bostick went on to throw five shutout innings and struck out a total of nine Cougars.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Schuster (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) pitched two innings of relief and caught three batters at the plate.

The College of Charleston left 11 runners on base to Pitt's seven.

Pitt faces Winthrop in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, March 7.
