Softball Falls To College of Charleston

MT. PLEASANT, S.C.--Pitt's softball team dropped the first of two against College of Charleston in a 2-0 shutout at Patriots Point, this afternoon.

The Panthers best opportunity to score was in the fourth inning when sophomore Samantha Card (Miami, Fla./Our Lady of Lourdes/Florida International) hit a one-out single to left field. Senior Joey Scarf (Humble, Texas/Humble) followed with a single of her own. Card and Scarf both recorded another base with a wild pitch but would be left stranded as the next two batters would be retired.

College of Charleston scored its first run in the third inning after Izmena Cabrera led off with a triple and was sent home on a sacrifice fly to left field. Cabrera scored the second run for the Cougars later in the fifth.

Pitt ended that fifth inning shortly after the second run, holding off two more runners. With two outs and runners at first and second, freshman Kayla Zinger (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) got the next batter to ground out to classmate Alex Shoemaker (Yorktown, Va./Grafton).

Zinger fanned five batters in the six innings and falls to 0-5 on the season.
