CLEARWATER, Fla.- The Pitt baseball team dropped a 7-0 decision to Sacred Heart Sunday in their first game of the Clearwater Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. The Panthers' record fell to 0-7 on the season, while the Pioneers improved to 2-2.
Both teams went scoreless through the first three innings of play. Pitt starter Kyle Landis (Hazelton, Pa./Hazelton) threw four strikeouts and gave up just two walks until the fourth inning when Sacred Heart put the first runs of the game on the board. The Pioneers used four singles and a Pitt error to tally four runs, moving the score to 4-0. These runs would prove to be enough as Landis (0-1) picked up the loss.
The Panthers were unable to muster much offense on the day, but redshirt freshman Gary Bucuren (Ambridge, Pa./Kentucky) continued to produce at the plate, going 2-3 with two singles. Designated hitter Jordan Herr (Lancaster, Pa./Delaware) went 2-3 as well with two singles of his own.
Three different times, Pitt had multiple runners on base, but were unable to score in the nine-inning contest, leaving six on base. Freshman reliever Mike Wood (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) had a good showing on the mound for the Panthers as he threw 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up just one hit, while striking out two in eleven batters faced.
The Pioneers added three more runs, two in the fifth inning and one in the top of the ninth for the game's final score of 7-0. Starter Chris Howard picked up his first win of the season for Sacred Heart, moving his record to 1-1.
Pitt will continue play in the Clearwater Invitational this week. The Panthers will face Michigan State Monday at a time yet to be determined before seeing Sacred Heart again on Tuesday for a 10 a.m. game and St. Joseph's on Wednesday and Thursday for 10 a.m. contests as well. Pitt will take on Lehigh on Friday at 3 p.m. and then again on Saturday at 1 p.m. before concluding play in Clearwater, Fla. with a third and final match up with Sacred Heart on Sunday at 10 a.m.
NOTES: Gary Bucuren continues to lead with a .400 batting average, going 10-25 on the season. This game marked Burcuren's third multi-hit game of 2007, while Jordan Herr posted the first multi-hit game of his career.
