Women's Volleyball Slips At Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C.--Pitt's women's volleyball team dropped snapped its three-match win streak after losing an early lead to Georgetown, 3-2, on the road this afternoon at McDonough Arena. The Panthers were led by senior Diana Andreyko with a season-high 23 kills, however the Hoyas won the match with scores of 16-30, 22-30, 30-25, 30-27 and 15-13.
Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) recorded a season-high 23 kills and seven digs in the match. She now has 1,678 career kills, which is just four short of claiming second place in the record boards.
Recording double-doubles in the match were juniors Kelly Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield/Pacific) and Stephanie Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne). Campbell posted 12 kills and 17 digs, while Ross tallied 10 kills and 10 digs.
Sophomore Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) tallied 13 kills in the match, while junior Jessica Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) chipped in 11. On the defensive end, sophomore Michelle Rossi (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) tied the match-high with 17 digs.
Pitt (11-9. 5-2 Big East) took a 2-0 lead in the match, but dropped the next three. As a team, the Panthers tallied 28 attack errors and five dig errors.
In game one the Panthers posted a .480 hitting percentage, while holding Georgetown (5-16, 2-5 Big East) to a .028 hitting clip. Dooley was perfect, recording four kills off four attacks in the contest.
The Panthers took the lead in game two, as Andreyko tallied six kills. Georgetown kept it close and tied the game six times, but Pitt held on for the win.
However, Georgetown would end the threat of a sweep as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game three. Pitt would take the short-lived lead at 14-13 following a kill from Ross, but a few plays later they trailed 22-17 before calling a timeout. Pitt and Georgetown would rally back and forth with points until the eventual Hoya win.
In game four, Pitt recorded a match-high 20 kills as a team, but committed eight errors that led to the three-point loss.
Pitt and Georgetown tied each other eight times a piece in games four and five. Pitt scored the first point of game five with a kill from freshman Rachel Kalberer (Irwin, Pa./Norwin), who saw her first action of the season in the match.
The Panthers would hold the lead at 6-5 after Rossi recorded her sixth ace of the year. On the next play, Georgetown would tie the game and take the lead shortly there after.
Andreyko would tie the game at 13, but Pitt would lose the next two points and the match.
Pitt faces USF on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m.
