PITT GYMNASTICS TAKES THIRD IN HOME QUAD MEET

PITTSBURGH - The Pitt gymnastics team faced tough competition this evening as they hosted No. 9 Michigan State and No. 11 West Virginia along with Maryland in a home quad meet.
The Panthers (1-2, 1-1 EAGL) finished third in the competition with a team score of 190.725. West Virginia (4-1, 2-0 EAGL) won the competition with a 193.150. Michigan State (2-2, 0-0 Big Ten) finished second with a 192.150, and Maryland (2-3, 0-2 EAGL) took fourth at 189.375.
The Panthers had two all-around competitors this evening. Senior Andrea Arlotta (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) and freshman Dani Bryan (Germantown, Md./Richard Montgomery) competed on all four events for the Panthers.
Pitt started on the vault, scoring a 48.375. The team was led by Bryan who recorded a 9.8 for a fourth-place finish. Sophomore Victoria McGuigan-Carl (Exeter, Pa./Exeter) was second for the Panthers with a 9.725, tying her for tenth. Pitt was in the lead after the first rotation, ahead of Maryland by 0.225. West Virginia was in third at 47.875, and Michigan State had a 46.450.
The Panthers had two falls on the uneven bars, requiring them to count one towards the team score of 47.875. Pitt finished with a 47.875. Leading the team was Arlotta with a 9.75, tying her for fourth. Samantha DeBone (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) finished in seventh with a 9.725. Pitt remained in the lead after the second rotation as well with a total of 96.250 points. In second was West Virginia at 95.950. Michigan State was in third at 95.825, and Maryland was in fourth at 94.350.
The Panthers struggled on the balance beam with four falls on the event. They finished with a 46.800. DeBone had the highest score for the Panthers, tying for third with a 9.750. Sophomore Andrea Konesky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) tied her career high, scoring a 9.575. Pitt dropped to third after the balance beam with a 143.050. West Virginia took the lead at 144.325, and Michigan State was in second at 144.150. Maryland remained in fourth at 142.125.
In the final event, Pitt had two top-three placewinners as McGuigan-Carl captured the event title with a 9.800. Bryan tied for third with a 9.700. Pitt freshman Shannon McConnell (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) tied for seventh with a 9.650. The Panthers remained in third place, scoring a 47.675 on the event.
Next up for the team is another home meet when they host New Hampshire and Air Force next Saturday at the Fitzgerald Field House. The meet is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
