PANTHERS CAPTURE SECOND TOURNAMENT TITLE AT RHODE ISLAND INVITATIONAL

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Pitt volleyball team continued its winning streak today with a victory over Northeastern to clinch its second tournament title of the year. The Panthers (7-0, 0-0 Big East) defeated the Huskies (2-4), 3-0. Pitt had its second tournament MVP of the season with outside hitter Diana Andreyko. Sophomore Stephanie Ross was additionally named to the all-tournament team.
"The team played very solid volleyball for three matches and maintained a good degree of focus throughout," said Head Coach Chris Beerman. "There was a good team effort this weekend, and we look forward to playing Duquesne on Tuesday".
Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) led the team with 17 kills and a .389 hitting percentage. She ranks second on the team with a 3.55 kills per game average. Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) recorded 15 kills for a .243 hitting percentage. Azadeh Boroumand (Red Deer, Alberta/Thurber) recorded the team's only double-double of the match with 35 assists and 12 digs.
The Pitt freshmen continued to provide a strong defense for the Panthers. Both Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and Kim Kern (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) averaged two blocks per game.
Pitt held the Huskies to only 20 points in the first game. The Panthers took the second game, 30-23, and closed out the win at 30-27.
The Panthers will open their home season against Duquesne on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. Pitt will then play host to the Pitt Invitational from Friday through Saturday.
